Abstract

Thermal insulation is an essential component of oil storage tank design and operation, reducing heat transfer between the tank and its surrounding environment while maintaining the desired temperature of stored petroleum products. Effective insulation contributes to improved operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption, enhanced product quality, and lower thermal stresses acting on tank structures, thereby supporting safe and reliable storage operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of thermal insulation systems used in oil storage tanks. It covers the characteristics of commonly used insulation materials, heat transfer mechanisms, factors affecting insulation performance, insulation thickness optimization, and thermo-economic aspects of insulation design. The review also summarizes recent developments in numerical modeling, particularly Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), for evaluating the thermal behavior of oil storage tanks under various operating and environmental conditions, including solar radiation, wind effects, and ambient temperature fluctuations. In addition, the paper reviews the influence of moisture ingress, insulation degradation, and fire exposure on the long-term performance of insulation systems. Emerging developments in smart insulation technologies, real-time condition monitoring, and artificial intelligence applications for insulation performance assessment and maintenance planning are also discussed. Overall, the reviewed literature indicates that selecting appropriate insulation materials and applying well-designed insulation systems can significantly reduce heat losses, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the operational safety of oil storage tanks. The review also highlights several areas that require further investigation, particularly the development of advanced insulation materials, intelligent monitoring techniques, and climate-adaptive insulation solutions for future petroleum storage facilities.
